About Us

The Bel Alton High School Alumni Association Community Development Corporation (Bel Alton CDC) was incorporated in March 1993 as a 501(c) (3) organization. Our membership is comprised of alumni, who are taxpaying, registered voters residing primarily in Charles County, Maryland. We share the dream of saving our former high school, which operated as the High School for African Americans until 1965, and preserving it as a symbol of hope and caring for low-income residents of Charles County.

Our Mission

The mission of our organization is to renovate the former Bel Alton High School, preserving the original exterior, and to restore it for new use as a Community Development Center.

Our Purpose

The Community Development Center will provide a comprehensive program of integrated self-help and community development services, including Head Start, day care, adult basic education, information systems training, business ownership opportunities, and other self-sufficiency oriented programs for a target population of low-income residents in the Bel Alton service area.

Management

This project represents a public/private partnership between the Bel Alton High School Alumni Association Community Development Corporation, various levels of local, state and federal government, as well as the private sector. The Bel Alton CDC will be coordinated with and not duplicative of existing programs. The CDC will fill a gap in the underserved southern end of the County.

The management team for the proposed economic development project has vast experience and knowledge in all essential aspects needed to ensure successful, cost beneficial and effective management of the project. More specifically, our backgrounds cover health and social services, administration, business development, commercial development, physical development and financial services.
